In Women and Visual Replication in Roman Imperial Art and Culture, Jennifer Trimble reexamines the familiar canon of Roman portraiture by considering not only its formal beauty but also its archaeological, social, and economic dimensions. She challenges the conventional view of Roman copies of Greek originals by exploring how identical body forms can mask intricate narratives of identity and power. By focusing on the 'Large Herculaneum Woman' - a draped female figure prominent in the second century CE and surviving in approximately two hundred examples - Trimble uncovers how visual replication served as a means of communicating and constructing a woman’s social identity. Her study reveals that the process of replicating images was central to shaping social hierarchies and mediating the complex relationship between imperial supremacy and local traditions.
