In an era marked by striking inequality, Laura Valentini invites us to rethink the moral obligations that bind the affluent to those struggling in poverty. In Justice in a Globalized World, she carefully examines whether these obligations should be understood as duties of egalitarian justice - similar to those that govern citizens within a state - or as weaker forms of humanitarian assistance. Drawing on prominent theories of cosmopolitanism and statism, Valentini presents a fresh normative framework that challenges conventional perspectives. At the heart of her analysis lies the argument that while duties of assistance compel us to help the needy, duties of justice impose legitimate limits on the forms of coercion exercised among individuals. With a keen focus on the differing characteristics of domestic and international coercion, the author demonstrates that global justice requires an approach that goes beyond simple statist relief measures yet stops short of full cosmopolitan equality. This thought-provoking work offers a critical reevaluation of the principles that should guide us in a globalized world.
